About Sacred Heart College

This school is a fulfillment of an ambition that Sacred Heart Parish, Apapa, has had for many years to have a Catholic Secondary School in the parish as well as a Catholic Nursery/Primary School. In the words of the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Andrew O’Sullivan, SMA, “we rightly deplore the falling standards in education in our schools. In getting our school up and running, we are making a contribution towards  reversing this sorry state of education.” Catholic education has played and is still playing a huge role in the development of the Church in Nigeria. Without Catholic schools, the Church would never have blossomed the way it has. We also need good and honest leaders for Nigeria. Catholic education provides this training.

The founding of this College is simply a dream come true. This beautiful compound now our college was formerly Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) property. It was acquired by the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos in March 2007. the College is owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos.

On the 24th of September 2007, Sacred Heart College opened with 14 students. First to be enrolled was Master Chigozie Opara, now the Senior Prefect. Then, six teachers resumed for duty. The 2007/2008 academic session ended with 28 students, 12 teaching staff, 14 support staff and 4 administrative staff. Our pioneer school Administrator (Principal) is Rev. Sr. Fidelia Mary Alao, EHJ and Mr. Ezewanabachili, F. as pioneer Head Teacher (Vice Principal).

When we started, we needed to do a lot of rearrangement and cleaning since the school was used for primary school before. Some of the facilities on ground had to be restructured to befit a secondary school. It is important to add that unlike other government establishments, former NPA Training School was well-managed by its former users. It was handed over to us in good condition structurally except for the lack of portable water. This necessitated the sinking of a borehole for the school use. There was also a big ditch in the middle of the school that sucks whatever volume of water gathers after rainfall. An old security officer of NPA told us that there used to be a big tree at that site. We had to invite an engineer to get it filled.

When we started, publishers wouldn’t supply us books because the order was small, except Longman Publishing. But we have taken a step in the history of this great institution and there was no turning back. Enrollment increased and the school was officially dedicated as a Catholic School by His Eminence, Anthony Cardinal Okogie (Proprietor), the Archbishop of Lagos on 15th October, 2007.

The pioneer staff of this school experienced first hand what it means to pioneer an institution of this standing. The PTA (Parents Teachers Association) was inaugurated on 18th January, 2008 and since then it has been one big family working together under the chairmanship of Engr. Gabby Dimude.

We have the following Laboratories and special rooms: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Home Economics, Basic Technology, Basic Science, Computer Lab., Music Room, T.D. Room, Art Studio and a Typing Pool.
